More information

To simplify the ordering process, we have bundled together our individual products into a complete metering and package that will allow you remotely meter electricity, water, and gas. The products are separated into two categories: Required and Recommended.

How to Set Up and Order a Metering Package:

Remote Water and Gas Metering Explained:

Required Items for remote water and/or gas metering:

1x EKM Omnimeter Pulse v.4: These are our universal kWh meters that are capable of accurately and reliably metering any electrical system in the world. They also count pulses from up to 3 pulse-output devices, such as our water and gas meters.

1x Stainless Steel Pulse-Output Water Meter: These are well made, industrial grade, stainless steel water meters. They can be read like traditional water meters, where you read the water consumption off of the face of the meter, or they can be read remotely via their pulse output. The pulses can be counted by the EKM-Omnimeter Pulse v.4. It can then be connected to a computer either locally or over the internet.

1x Pulse-Output Gas Meter: For every cubic foot of gas that is metered, our gas meters produce an electrical pulse. These pulses can be measured and counted by the EKM Omnimeter Pulse v.4. With this system in place it will be possible to read your gas consumption, either with a computer locally or over the internet from anywhere in the world.

1x EKM Push3: This is the communication device that sends your meter data to the cloud. It works by simply connecting it to your meter(s) and internet router. The device will instantly begin to send your meter data to the cloud. There is no setup or network configuration needed (plug and play).

Additional items required to meter electricity:

Current Transformers: The Current Transformers (CTs) are the little donut shaped devices that go around the hot wires being read. The Omnimeter Pulse will NOT be able to meter electricity without these.

  • 120 volt single phase North American or 230 volt 2-wire foreign systems require 1 CT per meter.
  • 120/240 volt single phase requires 2 CTs per meter.
  • 3-phase 3-wire requires 2 CTs per meter.
  • 3-phase 4-wire requires 3 CTs per meter.

To determine which CTs that are right for you, you will need to know the maximum amperage of your system and the outside diameter of your wire.

Recommended items:

1x Electric Meter Enclosure: If you aren't planning to mount your Omnimeter Pulse v.4 in an existing panel or breaker box, we recommend you mount it in one of our water-tight or indoor enclosures.

1x USB Adapter: This little converter allows you to connect your meter directly to a computer. This option is highly recommended in order to change meter settings such as Omnimeter v.4 Pulse Input Ratios with the EKM Dash, especially for users of the EKM Push system (which cannot yet make meter settings)

Fuse Holders w/ 1A Fuses: The fuse holder is mounted inline on the hot wires that tap into the main hot lines and run to your meter. They are intended to additionally protect your meter in case of a power surge or some other unforeseen anomaly.

50ft CAT5 Cable: This wire (used for RS485 communications and pulse counting) contains four twisted pairs of wire. Only one of the twisted pair wires is required for the communications side of the metering. This is the wire that will be used to connect your meter to an EKM Push gateway, the EKM iSerial, and/or to the USB Adapter. If there are multiple meters in the system, they can be connected to each other in a daisy chain. This wire also works well for connecting pulse-output water and/or gas meters to the Omnimeter Pulse v.4.

2x 485Bee Zigbee radio Nodes: Install one on the meter, or string of meters, and one on the EKM Push or USB Converter, in order to establish a wireless connection between the meter(s) and the communication device. Additional 485Bee nodes can be added to strengthen the mesh network.

1x 12V DC Power Supply: This can be used to power a Push3 and/or 485Bee radio. Use a 12V DC Splitter in order to power both devices with a single power supply.

1x 12V DC splitter: Allows you to use a single 12V DC power supply to power two devices, like the EKM Push and 485Bee.

Piercing Connectors: These will allow you to easily tap into your hot and neutral wires, and to run wires directly to your meter. These are the wires that power the meter and give it a voltage reference. These are optional. They can sometimes make installs easier.

1x Ethernet Cable: If You are planning to use the Push3 system, you will need an Ethernet cable to connect the Push3 gateway to your internet router, if you are not planning to connect via WiFi.

Sticker Label Sheet: Will allow you to clearly label up to 3 pairs of pulse wires from you water and/or gas meter(s), CTs if you're also metering electricity, and all electrical, CT, and communications wires as well.

Additional items you may need from your local supplier:

Tap Wires: If you are metering electricity you will need wire to tap off your main hot and neutral lines. These lines power the meter and give it a voltage reference. If you aren't metering electricity you will still need to to power it with hot and neutral wires.

Customize your metering package by choosing your products from the drop-down lists and check boxes above. If you would like to order additional products that aren't available in this package, please select them from the appropriate category of the Products Menu.
